The cost of 14 BILLION DOLLARS to complete a census is a disgrace. I am convinced that there is nothing our federal government can do efficiently. I can hardly wait until November.

I do not live in an HTC area. First I received a notice via the US Mail that I would be receiving the Census form in the mail in a few weeks. This was a waste of tax payers money. On March 1, 2010 the Census form was delivered in person to my front door by a census worker. Another waste of tax payers money. Why not just mail the form? While our country is on the the verge of bankruptcy this administration continues to waste the tax payers money and further jeopardise our economic recovery.

Illegal aliens may not be able to legally vote, but by including them in the census, they add to the
representation in the US Congress. Since
many voting places do not require ID to vote if your name is on the voter
registration, it is also questionable as to whether they vote or not. I am aware of the fraud in voter registration conducted by ACORN. Yes, of course, they use resources and that
cost falls on the legal tax paying citizens.
How many jobs could be given to legal citizens if our federal government
was competent in deporting the illegal aliens?

I think the H1N1 virus is even less of a viable argument against immigration, simply because it is not life-threatening if properly treated. There have been many cases in St. Louis already, and with the medicines available to us in the United States, the H1N1 flu looks and acts almost just like the normal flu.
I believe governments use fear way too often to control the public.

To be sure...there are heros in the music business. Bono & Sting come to mind, but most know about their work, in part, because they remain in the hot white spotlight. This has not been the case, at least in the United States, for Hanson. While I can say with confidence I'm no fan of Hanson's music, I am deeply greatful that they have made a comeback and used it to benefit others. How unselfish and amazing, particularly when one considers that they came from an industry that is filled with greed, sharks, thieves, and liars (and then there's the bad stuff about that industry-old joke). I am moved by their dedication and unselfishness as humanitarians. It's rare to see such compassion when it would be easy to simply live the "come back" life and count the money. Compare Hanson's story to any baseball player and his agent negotiating with a team. The contrast is incredible. Hanson's story is inspiring and there dedication and commitment is remarkable. I wish them truckloads of success and I hope their attitude rubs off on the entire music industry.

This is awesome! I knew that Hanson was still on the music scene to some extent ,but I had no idea that they were involved with helping people in Africa. It's amazing. Great Blog!

This is a brilliant piece, Laura! Having participated in the Walk in November 2007, it's awesome to know that Hanson is not only producing wonderful music, but whole-heartedly helping people in need at the same time :)

That exhibit looked so touching. I wish I had had the oppotunity to see it. It was the perfect way of saying that even though we all come from different cultures, eat different foods, listen to different kinds of music, work very different jobs, we all experience the same emotions in just growing and developing relationships as human beings. It was such a powerful exhibit, and I wish more people knew about it and thought about it on a daily basis.

Jessica made a good point--the citizens of the United States have to take action themselves. For the rest of you readers, what do you believe that entails? What can we do politically, or just in our daily lives? And what about those peopple who want nothing to do with understanding others?
