LEP Housing Initiative

Services are being provided in collaboration with the Urban League for Limited English Proficient (LEP) refugees and immigrants who are first time homebuyers and those struggling with adequate housing. LEPs are those who do not speak English as their first language and have a limited ability to read, write and speak in English. It also includes the limited ability to understand English when spoken to them.

Services are focused on the St. Louis metro area with emphasis on St. Louis City and St. Louis County. The St. Louis MSA consists of nine counties in Missouri and eight counties in Illinois with a population in 2010 of 2,779,939.

While services are open to all immigrants and refugees, outreach and interpreting assistance is provided in the following language groups: Arabic, Bosnian, Chinese, Korean, Nepali, Russian, Spanish, and Vietnamese.

The Urban League currently provides comprehensive housing counseling services at three regional locations. They will provide credit counseling and mortgage lending using interpreters as needed.

The International Institute will provide educational sessions and community forums from client groups that IISTL reach through its programs and immigrant network. Staff will also provide capacity building training sessions with at least five HUD grantees that show a commitment to expanding their housing services to the growing LEP community.
