Literacy
We offer individualized literacy instruction to address the special needs of preliterate and low-level literate ESOL students. Students receive one-on-one or small group instruction. Click here for information about current literacy tutorial program registration and classroom schedule.
We help develop English reading and writing skills in adult students who are not literate in their own language. Thus, they can more fully interact with their families and the larger community and increase their potential to find higher skilled jobs. More than 100 students attend tutorials annually.
Instruction is provided by volunteer tutors, who are trained and overseen by state-certified adult education staff experienced in ESOL literacy instruction. Interested in volunteering? Click here.
Who is eligible? Students must be at least 17 years old and not enrolled in a public secondary education institution.
There is no fee to attend. Instructor costs are underwritten by the Adult Education and Literacy Program of the St. Louis City Public Schools, the Office of Refugee Resettlement of the Department of Health and Human Services and other private and public sources.
